Project 2 - Comps

Comp 1
I was going for more of a GQ/Calvin Klein kind of look. The words and colors are suposed signify the different scents and they are supposed to correlate to 3 basic personality types.

Comp 2
This one is definitely more traditional. Because it's just a first round comp I declined to add all the dynamic photoshop effects. The intention is however that the final product would make heavy use dynamic shading and gradients in order to give it that sleek look we are used to seeing in conjunction with athletic hygiene products.

The Product: OBAO Antipersperant

The Brand
I could find absolutely no info about Obao as a brand. In fact the only connection I could make between Obao and Garnier is on the product itself. After extensively scouring the internet, the most I was able to ascertain was that Obao seems to be a be a brand of deodorant for spanish speaking consumers. They have a both a male and female version of the product.

The Product
Again the only information available to me about the product is on the label itself. Besides being and antiperspirant owned by Garnier the product states that is for men and that it offers 24 hour protection. It also states that it uses no alchohol, "sin alchohol" and that it won't stain your clothes, "no mancha la ropa."

My Take
Obao antiperspirant is a fairly generic brand of deodorant manufactured by Garnier for a spanish speaking audience. It seams to boast its lasting, 24 hour effectiveness thus I will try to spin this as your standard, "go to" brand of athletic deodorant.

Creative Brief for Trader Joe's Brand Peanut Butter

A Brief History:

Taken from http://www.traderjoes.com/about/our-story.asp

It all started in the 50s... Would you believe we started out as a small chain of convenience stores? It's true. Way back in 1958. We were called Pronto Markets. In '67, our founder, the original Trader Joe, changed our name (yes, to Trader Joe's) and the way we do business.

We made the stores bigger (if you can imagine), decked the walls with cedar planks and donned our crew in cool Hawaiian shirts. Most importantly, we started putting innovative, hard-to-find, great-tasting foods in the "Trader Joe's" name. That cut our costs and saved you money. Still does. And that's important, because "Value" is a concept we take very seriously. And by value we mean great everyday prices on all of our great products — no sales, no gimmicks, no clubs to join, no special cards to swipe... How do we do it?

We buy direct from suppliers whenever possible, we bargain hard to get the best price, and then pass the savings on to you.If an item doesn't pull its weight in our stores, it goes away to gangway for something else. We buy in volume and contract early to get the best prices. Most grocers charge their suppliers fees for putting an item on the shelf. This results in higher prices... so we don't do it. We keep our costs low — because every penny we save is a penny you save.

It's not complicated. We just focus on what matters — great food + great prices = Value. Okay, we skipped over a few milestones, but you can catch them in the Trader Joe's Timeline. It's a trip.

Mission Statement:

Taken from http://manonamission.blogspot.com/2006/03/trader-joes-mission-statement.html

At Trader Joe's, our mission is to bring our customers the best food and beverage values and the information to make informed buying decisions. There are more than 2000 unique grocery items in our label, all at honest everyday low prices. We work hard at buying things right: Our buyers travel the world searching for new items and we work with a variety of suppliers who make interesting products for us, many of them exclusive to Trader Joe’s. All our private label products have their own "angle," i.e., vegetarian, Kosher, organic or just plain decadent, and all have minimally processed ingredients.

Company Values:

Taken from http://www.traderjoes.com/about/our-story.asp

"...because "Value" is a concept we take very seriously. And by value we mean great everyday prices on all of our great products..."

Competitive Advantage:

-Fun and relaxing, hassle free environment.
-Interesting and alternative product selection ranging from organic foods to imported cuisine.
-Trader Joe's brand foods which offers cheap, quality alternatives for everyday items.

Target Audience:

Taken from http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=353529

Scarborough Data, a market research firm, profiles the typical Trader Joe's shopper as a college-educated, white homeowner with a median age of 44 and a median household income of $64,000. Almost evenly divided among married people and singles, females and males, two-thirds have no kids at home.

According to Pat St. John, Trader Joe's vice president for marketing, the company's target customer is a cost-conscious, health-conscious label-reader who is not tied to national brand names. Company surveys have found that many of them are well-traveled and looking to replicate foods they have enjoyed elsewhere.

Anecdotal information gleaned informally from Trader Joe's shoppers reveals several sometimes overlapping types: There's the frugal foodie looking for the next new thing; the iconoclast who resents "customer loyalty cards" and dislikes big-box retailers; the health-conscious, ecologically sensitive parent seeking organic and pesticide-free foods, environmentally friendly cleaning supplies and wholesome snacks; child-free working couples and singles who favor the convenience foods packaged just right for one or two; and a whole lot of people who like to indulge in luxuries like flowers, candy, cheese, wine and Greek yogurt without signing over their paycheck?

Competitors:

Other organic medium sized grocery stores such as Sprouts and Fresh & Easy.

Industry Trends:

Trader Joe's and Trader Joe's brand products need to keep up with current health food trends in order to stay competitive and maintain their competitive edge. After all that's all part of the Trader Joe's marketing scheme, to bring consumers interesting and healthy food alternatives to meet their everyday needs. Other industry trends include the "Organic Food Movement" and the "Fair Trade Movement."

Good Food Packaging Designs

#1 - Pop Chips

Good because of the minimalist style, including it's monochromatic color schemes (save for the chips of coarse), and its contemporary all lower case sans serif type treatment and it's amazing logo featuring knocked lettering.

#2 - Yellow Tail Wine

Good again because of it's minimalist style offering appeal to younger wine drinkers. The consistency between wine varieties offers brand recognition and the color variations draw the eye to the bottles on the shelf.

#3 - Captain Crunch

Good Because of it's bright color and clutter-free layout. High contrast between the logo and background offer immediate brand recognition. Features a child friendly mascot, catchy slogan, and even preview of the cereal itself.

#4 - Dryer's Fruit Bars (Lime)

Good because its colorful, fresh look. Features fresh cut limes glistening with morning dew, a product highlight, and what seams like certifications on the bottom right which add to the credibility of the product.

#5 Ale Smith Wee Heavy

Great design because of it's elegance and similarity to wine or champagne packaging. Features a clean and recognizable logo, and creative product type treatment which further emphasizes its Scottish heritage.

New Blog for 446

So I updated this blog for a new class... art 446, Packaging Design. I hope you guys like it. I'm excited to take this class as it is only one of two more classes I need before I graduate. I know the whole blogging thing is weird at first but for those of you who don't or havent at least done it for class before, it's not too bad. Think of it like a class discussion on moodle only you get to design what other people see when they are responding to your topics and what not. It's also a great way to see all the work you've done throughout the semester and it can even be helpful if you need to turn in work on a day when you can;t make it to class. Anyway good luck and happy blogging...  :)

View Askewstival Sketches

The View Askewstival

So I decided that my movie festival would be a Kevin Smith's, View Askew movie's, movie festival.
This is Kevin Smith....
He's a director. He owns a production company called View Askew Productions which is responsible for movies such as....

and

Another key element of all the View Askew movies is their cast, many of the characters remain the same throughout all the titles, most notable are Jay and Silent Bob. He also likes to cast Ben Affleck a lot. I dont like Ben Afflek but apparently Kevin Smith does. Anyway Kevin Smith directs a lot of satirical and witty comedy movies most of which I grew up watching in Jr. High and High School. I picked these because they are light hearted, funny, and since I've grown up with them I have a bit of an affinity to them. Also since Kevin Smith is a big comic book nerd I figured comic book illustrations would easily suit the franchise and create an interesting style for my new movie posters.

Olympic Logo Sketches

Vienna 2020 Summer Olympic Candidate

Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primary city, with a population of about 1.7 million (2.4 million within the metropolitan area, more than 25% of Austria's population), and is by far the largest city in Austria, as well as its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 10th-largest city by population in the European Union. Vienna is host to many major international organizations, such as the United Nations and OPEC

In a 2005 study of 127 world cities, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the city first (in a tie with Vancouver, Canada) for quality of life. This assessment was mirrored by the Mercer Survey in 2009 and 2010. Analytically, the city was ranked 1st globally for a culture of innovation in 2007 and 2008, and 2nd globally after Boston in 2009 from 256 cities on an analysis of 162 indicators in the Innovation Cities Index on a 3-factor score covering culture, infrastructure and markets. As a city, Vienna regularly hosts urban planning conferences and is often used as a case study by urban planners.

The city rates highly in popular opinion-based journalistic rankings from magazines such as Monocle, where it is rated 8th among the "Top 25 Livable Cities" in 2010.

All of this was taken from Wikipedia.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_Olympic_Games, Vienna has not yet hosted a Summer Olympic Games.

It Begins...

Here it goes, my first post, a little about me... I'm 21, and a graphic design student along with probably everybody else who's probably ever going to read this blog. I don't know what else to say about myself, I love design, and I love my classes at CSUN but for some reason I don't see myself as a "Designer." When I think of a "Designer," I think of well dressed New York socialite with some room for guessing as to which direction they're sexually oriented. I think of myself more as a creative personality with an eye for design aesthetics. I think I have an innate ability to recognize the elements of design in the world around me, though I think most people can probably choose between good design and bad design given the choice, I don't think everybody has the ability to articulate why some design is better than others let alone understand it themselves.

That being said it's kind of accident that I'm actually a student of graphic design. In my second year of college at Moorpark Community College I took my first Graphic Design class and at the time, I had no idea what the word Graphic Design meant let alone how to use Illustrator CS3 which had been recently introduced to me. I ended up being a complete failure in that class and I think if it wasn't for my attitude, I actually would have failed. In the end because of my attitude and passion for this new found art my Professor helped my apply for a small, often over looked scholarship for $430, the exact amount of Adobe Illustrator. My first year at CSUN I was still a declared Chemistry Major, but I found that ever since my Graphic Design class my perspective on art had changed completely. My first semester at CSUN was spent endlessly doodling in the margens of my notes, but these weren't just doodles, I had all of a sudden become obsessed with letters, spacing, and the relationship of each to other elements on the page, I was hooked. Later that semester a few of the guys in my fraternity, Sigma Chi, helped me to realize what exactly a Graphic Designer is, what they do, and how you actually have a career being one. After all I had secretly been harboring fears of wearing a lab-coat and crunching numbers for the rest of my life, so that week I changed majors from Chemistry to Graphic Design and the rest is as they say, history.
